Everything you need to know
Foundation Year — the essentials
1Who benefitsFour kinds of students: (1) your school certificate lacks Biology or Chemistry at the required level, (2) you sat an entrance exam and missed the pass mark, (3) you have been out of education for years and need to rebuild study habits, (4) your school system does not map onto EU medical entry requirements (common for some non-EU educations).
2What you studyBiology, Chemistry and Physics to exactly the level the entrance exams demand — often taught by the same faculties that set the exams. Plus medical English, study skills, exam technique, mock papers and interview practice. Duration: 5 months (intensive) or full academic year (traditional).
3What it deliversA properly prepared candidate for the entrance exam next cycle. Students who complete Foundation Year at Charles University's own pre-med course routinely enter Charles medicine the following year. Programmes work — they are the university's own preparation, aligned exactly with their exam.
4CostFoundation programmes are separate courses with their own tuition (€3,000–8,000 for the year depending on university). Our placement into them is free. Compare with losing a full year of your life to an unprepared re-attempt.
5The route afterFoundation Year → entrance exam → 6-year MD. Total from Foundation start to graduation: 7 years. Still faster than repeating a failed year of medicine, and dramatically higher chance of first-time pass.
FAQ — commonly asked
Frequently asked questions
Does a foundation year guarantee medical school admission?
No, but it dramatically improves your odds — you enter the exam knowing exactly what it demands. Charles University's own foundation year, for example, has a much higher progression rate to Charles medicine than external applicants.
Does the foundation year count toward the 6 years of medicine?
No — it is preparation. Medicine still runs the full 6 years afterwards. Think of it as a targeted investment year.
Is a foundation year worth the cost?
Yes if it moves you from likely rejection to likely acceptance. The cost is small compared with losing a year to an unprepared re-attempt.
Which universities run foundation years?
McDaniel College Budapest, Charles University 1st and 3rd Faculties (their own pre-med), several other faculties in Hungary and the Czech Republic. We match you to the one aligned with your target medical university.
Can I do a foundation year in one country and medicine in another?
Yes — a solid pre-med preparation is valuable at any partner medical school. Charles's own foundation year is particularly recognised across Central European faculties.
How long does a foundation year take?
Intensive courses are 5–6 months. Traditional academic-year programmes are 9–10 months. Both aim at the following autumn's medical intake.
Do I need a foundation year if I passed the entrance exam already?
No — a foundation year is for students who need to prepare. If you have passed, we move you toward enrolment.
Can international students without EU citizenship do a foundation year in Europe?
Yes — student visas cover the foundation year, and continue into the medical degree that follows.
Is English the language of instruction?
Yes at all our foundation partners — teaching, textbooks and exams are in English.
