Graduate Entry Dentistry — the essentials

1Who qualifiesScience and health graduates (biology, biomedicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental hygiene, dental nursing) are the strongest candidates for advanced-standing DMD. Non-science graduates require additional bridging.
2The credit-transfer processUniversities assess syllabus overlap. Dental hygienists and dental nurses typically receive the most credits, often skipping into year 2 or 3. Science graduates typically enter year 2. Non-science graduates typically enter year 1 with some credit.
3What to expectAdvanced-standing dentistry saves 1–2 years compared with restarting. Universities may require you to sit specific modules (particularly hands-on practical dental subjects) even if you have credit for the theory.
4DocumentsBachelor's diploma, full transcript, detailed syllabi for every relevant course, portfolio if you have clinical dental experience, translations and notarisation.
5Post-graduationEU-recognised DMDs open all 27 EU member states automatically. UK GDC route via Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) is well-established for internationally trained dentists.
FAQ — commonly asked

Frequently asked questions

Which universities offer graduate entry to dentistry?

UMF Cluj-Napoca, Medical University of Sofia, Riga Stradiņš and Semmelweis all consider advanced-standing DMD applications case by case.

Do dental hygienists get more credits than science graduates?

Usually yes — hygienists have direct dental subject overlap that science graduates lack. Nursing graduates also often receive strong credits.

Can I go directly into clinical years?

Rarely — dental practical subjects are usually re-taken at the awarding university to ensure competency.

Is there a 4-year graduate DMD in Europe?

Not as a standard programme. Advanced-standing into the 5-year DMD is the normal route.

How much does graduate-entry dentistry cost?

Same as regular DMD at each university: €6,500/yr (Bulgaria/Romania) to €16,500/yr (Prague). Total cost depends on how many years credit you receive.

Is a European DMD recognised in the UK?

Yes — automatic EU recognition. UK registration for international DMDs via ORE for non-EU graduates; automatic for EU DMDs held by EU citizens.

Can I practise dentistry in the US after a European DMD?

Yes but harder than medicine — requires ADA-CODA advanced standing programmes at US dental schools, typically 2–3 years additional study.

What if I do not have a Bachelor's but have dental nursing experience?

Some universities credit vocational experience. We assess your specific case and evidence.

Are entrance exams required for graduate entry to dentistry?

Some universities test Biology and Chemistry; others admit on your undergraduate file plus interview. Varies per faculty.
