Studying in Hungary — what you need to know
Hungary opened English-medium medical programmes decades before most of Europe caught up. Four world-class faculties — Semmelweis (Budapest), Debrecen, Pécs and Szeged — together host tens of thousands of international students, giving Hungary the most established English medical community on the continent. Semmelweis was founded in 1769 and consistently ranks among the top 250 universities globally; the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest, founded in 1787, is one of the oldest vet schools on Earth.
EU recognition is automatic across all 27 member states. The GMC route is well-worn — thousands of Hungarian graduates practise in the UK. Living costs in Budapest are €500–700 per month, which is roughly half of Western European cities, and Budapest itself is regularly voted Europe's most beautiful capital.
Admission uses written Biology and Chemistry exams plus an oral interview in English. Application windows run from November to May depending on faculty. Our advisors prepare you with original past papers from your target faculty and coach the interview beforehand.

How much does it cost to study medicine in Hungary?
Tuition €13,000–17,000 per year (Semmelweis at the top, Debrecen slightly lower); living costs €500–700 per month in Budapest. Full six-year total: roughly €100,000–130,000.
Do I need to speak Hungarian?
No — the entire programme is in English. You take basic Hungarian in early years for clinical rotations. Hungarian is genuinely difficult, but the university teaches only what you need for the wards.
Can I work in the UK, Germany or the US after graduating in Hungary?
Yes — Hungarian degrees are EU-recognised (automatic across 27 states), GMC-recognised for UK (via UKMLA/PLAB), and ECFMG-recognised for the US (via USMLE).
What is the entrance exam?
Written Biology and Chemistry exams plus an English interview. Format and dates differ by faculty; we prepare you specifically for the one you apply to.
When are the application deadlines?
They differ by faculty: Semmelweis around 31 May, Debrecen rolling to July, Pécs and Szeged similar. We build your timeline around your target intake.
Is Budapest a good student city?
One of the best in Europe — repeatedly in QS top 30. €4–8 restaurant meals, €25 monthly transport, huge student community, thermal baths, and Vienna/Prague only 3 hours away by train.
Can I do my residency in Hungary after graduating?
Yes with Hungarian proficiency for daily patient work — but most of our graduates use the Hungarian MD to enter residency in Germany, Austria or the UK, which is fully open to them.
What is the biggest advantage of Hungary over Western Europe?
Same EU-recognised MD, same career doors — at roughly a quarter of the total cost of UK medicine, and with a 35-year track record placing English-speaking graduates worldwide.
Is veterinary medicine also available in English in Hungary?
Yes — the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest (founded 1787) offers a 5.5-year EAEVE-accredited DVM in English.
