Studying in Spain — what you need to know

Spanish public medical universities are effectively closed to non-EU internationals due to the national selectivity exam and Spanish-language requirement. Instead, our Spanish placements are through Universidad Europea — private campuses in Madrid and Valencia offering English-taught medicine with world-class simulation facilities, modern buildings and Mediterranean student life. Tuition is Western European (€19,000–22,000/yr) but the experience is genuinely European in a way that Eastern European campuses cannot always match.

Admission is via the university's own test and interview, not the national exam. All degrees are EU-recognised. Living costs €800–1,200/month.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does medical school in Spain cost?

Universidad Europea: €19,000–22,000/yr tuition; living costs €800–1,200/month. Total six-year cost: approximately €175,000–220,000.

Do I need to speak Spanish to study medicine in Spain?

At Universidad Europea's English track, no — teaching is in English. Basic Spanish is helpful for clinical rotations and student life.

Which Spanish universities teach medicine in English?

Universidad Europea has two campuses — Madrid and Valencia — offering full English-taught medical programmes.

Is a Spanish medical degree recognised outside Spain?

Yes — automatic EU recognition. GMC-recognised for the UK, ECFMG for the US.

What is the admission process?

University-specific admission: an entrance test, interview and academic file assessment. No national selectivity exam required for the English track.

Can I do my specialisation in Spain after graduating?

Spanish specialisation (MIR) is competitive and requires Spanish fluency. Most international graduates from Universidad Europea use their EU degree for residency elsewhere.

Is Spain worth the higher cost compared with Eastern Europe?

Depends on priorities: Mediterranean lifestyle, modern campuses and Western European experience come at a Western European price. The same EU-recognised MD emerges from Bulgaria at a third of the cost.

Is Madrid or Valencia better for medicine?

Madrid has the larger campus and more urban life; Valencia has a slightly smaller programme and a more relaxed coastal setting. Both confer identical degrees.

Are there scholarships for medicine in Spain?

Some merit-based discounts are available at Universidad Europea. We assess your eligibility during consultation.
